Time to scrap Entrepreneurs relief
02 January 2019
The AAT has called on the government to scrap Entrepreneurs relief and divert the £4bn it currently costs the taxpayer towards initiatives or reliefs that encourage start-up or scale-up activity instead.
AAT’s Phil Hall, said: “The Chancellor is absolutely right to want to encourage entrepreneurialism but despite its name, this isn’t very successfully achieved through Entrepreneurs Relief. As a result AAT recommends that this expensive misguided, ineffective relief be scrapped, and the savings be invested in other entrepreneurial activity.”
The AAT is not alone in its thinking. The independent Office for Tax Simplification (OTS) has said the relief does not achieve its original objective. IPPR, a left-leaning think-tank, and the Resolution Foundation (more on the right) have also called for the relief to be scrapped.
