The Big nine accountancy firms are joining forces to try to agree proposals that they hope will halt a full-scale review by the Competition and Markets Authority.
Among draft proposals under discussion are believed to be market cap on the number of FTSE 350 companies any one firm can audit. Shared or joint audits are another idea being looked at.
The Big 4 sharing people (people transfers) and resources with smaller firms is another agenda item.
