Landlords don’t like young tenants
01 August 2017
The housing crisis for young people is set to worsen as more and more landlords refuse to rent to people under 35, says a study by Sheffield Hallam University.
The research found one third of landlords were ‘cutting back’ on renting to under-35s. It appears concern over young people’s ability to pay the rent is encouraging landlords to look for older and what they believe are more secure tenants. Students could be in an even worse position with almost half of Landlords saying they do not let to students.
The number of 16 to 24-year olds privately renting has increased by 50% since 1996, rising from 42% then to 64% in 2016.
