Xero’s Gary Turner has started a campaign for a change to the dictionary definition of accountants. He believes the current Oxford English Dictionary definition is out of date and needs a recharge. The current definition of accountant reads “Accountant – a person whose job is to keep or inspect financial accounts”. Turner wants it to changed to: “A person whose job is to keep or inspect and advise on financial accounts.”
He believes the change will help shake off the ‘archaic’ perception of the industry and he is calling on 20,000 supporters to sign and back his pledge. Over 650 people and counting have already signed up.
