Auditors under attack
16 November 2018
Auditors in South Africa have become the victims of a wave of violent attacks, according to the Daily Trust. It says that the concern now is that government experts, sent to check the books of the country’s increasingly corrupt municipalities, are being intimidated or worse on a daily basis. All on the orders of local officials.
In one reported attack, thieves broke into a guesthouse and shot a female auditor in both legs and fled with her laptop.
Auditors were also chased away from another town after they went to investigate a gap in the accounts of £20m.
Government auditors now claim that these local municipalities are failing to account for £1.16bn a year.
