Apprenticeship drop continues
29 May 2018
UK businesses are demanding reforms to the government’s apprenticeship levy. New figures showed there was a 40% drop in the take up of apprenticeships in February 2018, when compared to the same month the year before.
This February some 21,800 new apprentices were signed up, a big drop on the 36,400 for February 2017.
Employers are claiming the difficulties to accessing funds and higher costs rather than opposition to the scheme are the reason for the drop. Small companies current don’t pay the levy. The changes, however, mean that many are abandoning training because in most cases they must now pay 10% of the cost of the apprenticeship. Under the old system it was fully funded by the government.
