Another apprenticeship fall
21 August 2018
Another slump in apprenticeship numbers has added to the rising demand for reform of the levy.
Latest figures show in the 10 months to May this year the number of apprenticeship starts fell by 31%.
Business groups are now saying the government’s target of 3m new apprentices by 2020 will not be met.
Blick Rothenberg’s Andrew Sanford was in no doubt what is to blame: “The Government levy was introduced to stimulate the number of apprenticeships that were taken up, but it appears to have had the reverse effect.”
He felt it was disappointing that the majority of employers regarded the apprenticeship levy as a tax rather than a means of providing accessibility for training the young.
Sanford joined the chorus calling for urgent reform of the levy system.
