And the wallet was empty…

06 March 2019

When Canada’s largest crypto-currency exchange owner, Gerald Cotton, died the password access to his 115,000 accounts died with him. An IT expert couldn’t open the account, but with the help of EY the wallets have been opened and guess what – yes they were empty!

Cotton’s sudden death at the age of 30 had left many people in financial limbo. He had the password for a digital account holding what people thought was £145m of customers’ money, held on the QuadrigaCX exchange.

Rumours that Cotton might have faked his own death after running into trouble are bound to resurface, although the Canadian government has confirmed he died in India.
