Accountants urged to tighten cyber security for MTD
07 February 2019
Accountants have been told to tighten cyber security in time for the government’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative, which launches on April 1 2019.
Businesses who are not prepared for the digital tax process will be vulnerable to cyber criminals and hackers looking for an easy target, warns the Treasury Select Committee.
9 in 10 security breaches are the result of human error, meaning accountants are being advices to educate and train their staff, as well as their clients, on the importance of online security and data protection.
“With MTD being so new, criminals will view this as the perfect time to trick the unsuspecting into revealing confidential information,” explains Mo Stevens, Chief Executive Officer at Xcina, a Shearwater Group plc portfolio company which helps companies build digital resilience.
“The best way to prevent a breach is to ensure that all staff are trained on how to recognise and respond if they are being targeted, and that they comply with set policies when it comes to electronic communications and internet usage.”
